چکیده

We numerically analyze the optical response and nonlinear susceptibilities of fishnet metamaterials with the holes infiltrated by a third-order nonlinear dielectric. Through full-wave simulations and employing a nonlinear parameter retrieval method, we confirm and quantify the enhanced nonlinearities, showing bulk third-order nonlinear susceptibilities that are up to two orders of magnitude larger than the nonlinear dielectric. We also use the retrieved parameters to calculate the material figure of merits and the conversion efficiencies, showing material figure of merits up to two orders of magnitude larger and conversion efficiencies up to four orders of magnitude larger than the nonlinear dielectric alone. Though these results are calculated using one-unit-cell thick structures, the large magnitude of the enhancement still makes these structures attractive, allowing reasonable conversion efficiencies supported by even subwavelength slabs.

Theory of fishnet negative-index optical metamaterials.

We theoretically study fishnet metamaterials at optical frequencies. In contrast with earlier works, we provide a microscopic description by tracking the transversal and longitudinal flows of energy through the fishnet mesh composed of intersecting subwavelength plasmonic waveguides. The analysis is supported by a semianalytical model based on surface-plasmon coupled-mode equations, which provi...

Gain and plasmon dynamics in negative-index metamaterials

Photonic metamaterials allow for a range of exciting applications unattainable with ordinary dielectrics. However, the metallic nature of their meta-atoms may result in increased optical losses. Gain-enhanced metamaterials are a potential solution to this problem, but the conception of realistic, three-dimensional designs is a challenging task. Starting from fundamental electrodynamic and quant...

Negative beam displacements from negative-index photonic metamaterials.

It is well known that refraction of light at interfaces leads to a beam displacement for oblique incidence of light onto a slab of material. In ray optics and for homogeneous isotropic materials, the sign of this beam displacement is strictly identical to the sign of the refractive index. Our numerical calculations reveal negative beam displacements from state-of-the-art double-fishnet-type pho...
